Video Card help!?!

Help!I have a Presario 6000 computer. I was using onboard graphics. I bought a ATI Radeon 9600 pro 128. After installing it, it is noticably faster but I have lines and Patches that appear randomly.

Can someone help me? I ‘m not very good with computers.

  1. The first thing I would do is go the videocards website and download and install the latest driver for the video card. This can be a complicated process so make sure to read the release notes/installation instructions.
Ok that being said, assuming that you dont have alot of knowledge of computers I would suspect that you did not disable the onboard video. Running both onboard video (chipset memory shared video)and a video card can cause odd behavior depending on what chipset video it is, and what video card it is. If you know how to get into the bios… When the computer is very first starting up press delete F1 or F2 to enter setup mode. Then look for Onboard Device Setup, and disable onboard agp or vga (depends on the bios). Being that its a compaq presario, you could also try calling tech support and asking them how to go about disabling the onboard video.

  2. There are a myriad of things that could cause this to happen. The most common would be a driver. Check the video card and monitor’s manufacturers’ websites to make sure you have the latest update. It is also possible that the video cable is not connected correctly. You should check all these things, but as I said, there are any number of possible causes. You may need to disable the onboard card in BIOS. Your screen resolution/refresh rate could be set wrong (though I have never known this to cause patches to appear in a screen), or it is possible that the card is bad. Most likely though, a new driver will fix the problem. I hope this helps some, but if not, feel free to send me an email and maybe I can help you further.

  3. If it is still causing trouble try powering down your machine. This means unplug it.
Reseat the card and power back up.
Video card drivers do not have to be the latest and greatest. Try some older drivers from the card’s Mfg web site. Not Joe Blow’s driver emporium or the type of card driver. Use the mfg only. If that does not work remove all vid card drivers and let windows update load up one.
Nothing wrong with that. The card will function fine. You just won’t have those fancy utilities that most people don’t need any ways.
Otherwise call or email your tech support for your computer which you should have already done.

  4. Unless you are using PCI your issue may be the AGP standard, the Persario being at most AGP2.0, 1/2/4x, and the Radeon 9600 Pro being AGP3.0, 4/8x. Try more information try this link:
