To Smiley or Not Smiley?

Smiley FaceDo you and your friends frequently use the phrase LOL?

How about ending things on a sweet note often :)

Well, some people think that too much of anything can be a bad thing. :( Unfortunately, there are a number of people, LOL, me one of them who tends to over use the ‘LOL’ and :) a bit too often. In fact, I don’t use the standard smiley, I use the ;), winking on AOL. But there are some who feel the need to take intervention on these matters.

  1. LOL, for me anyway, has become a way to insult people and then get out of that insult with a simple LOL. Not normally an intentional insult such as making a homophobic remark in the presence of a gay individual, in a gaming environment, and then I reply with a LOL. This may not actually defuse the problem but it does seem to move the attention off, it’s more of a way for me to admit a screw up.

  2. That reminds me of that funny piece where you can say anything as long as you follow it with a “Bless his/her heart.”

“Oh, she steals husbands and cheats on her taxes and kicks puppies and hates kids and pulls wings off flies and reads the end of a mystery novel first… bless her heart.”
