Coming in The Near Future…Skype 3.0
The Beta version of Skype 3.0 was released today.
But I know someone is saying to themselves aloud in a room full of people… What is Skype? Skype - a Voice Over Internet Protocol VoIP company and software enables you to make phone calls and other types of communications via a broadband connection.
Currently, Skype users can make phone calls to other Skype users for FREE anywhere around the world. You also can make phone calls to land-based and cell phones for a fee. Skype also allows its users to make phone calls to land-based and cell phones in the US for free - until the end of the year.
Skype’s newest VoIP software - Skype 3.0, which is in beta release testing, has several new features that previous versions did not have. Some of which are:
- Click to call ordinary phone numbers from any website.
- Easier to use, more powerful and personal interface.
- Public chats and Skypecasts – conference calls and text chats with people from around the world with similar interest.
“This software upgrade reflects Skype’s strategy of diversifying beyond Internet telephony toward other modes of online communications and of finding new revenue streams beyond phone charges”, said Niklas Zennström, Skype’s CEO and co-founder, at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.
“Eventually, the price of telephone calls will continue falling until they are free, so Skype needs to generate revenue from other sources, such as e-commerce and advertising,” he said.

You say: “Skype also allows it’s users to make phone calls to land-based and cell phones in the US for free - until the end of the year.” Will there be a fee next year?
Also, what has changed in Skype 3.0 Beta?
Thanks
Hi wscc777,
There is “supposedly” going to be a fee starting next year. Unfortunately, they have not published the rates. In regards to the changes, I’ve only seen the changes I listed in the blog entry. But if I see any other changes, I’ll be sure to let you and everyone else know.
Thanks for reading and participating!
