Who did you register your .com with?
Tuesday, Microsoft was granted accreditation by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) to
issue high-level domain names.
Microsoft said in a statement Tuesday that the ICANN accreditation “will be helpful and educational for us as policies evolve and we introduce new and improved Internet-based services to our customers. Becoming an ICANN-accredited registrar is just one of many ways we can improve our customers’ online and search experience,” the statement said.
This accreditation is most likely due to Microsoft releasing its small business web service “Microsoft Office Live” from beta testing on November 15th. Office Live is a web-based service giving small businesses a web site, accounting, customer management, worker collaboration and basic management capabilities. Included with the Office Live service, users will be able to purchase online advertising on MSN and in the near future, Google, Yahoo, Ask.com and Local.com.
“Small businesses want to be able to do sales and marketing wherever they want. It’s hard for them to figure out how different search engines work. If we can bring these together in one place, they can do real-time results and price comparison … to find out which search engine sends them the most traffic,” said Baris Cetinok, director of product management for Office Live.
Microsoft is offering the domain name registration free to its Microsoft Office Live users. Microsoft is accredited to register .com, .net, .org, .biz, info, name and .pro top-level domains.
