Review of LaCie Porsche 500gb External Hard Drive

This is a quick review of the LaCie Porsche 500gb external Hard drive available right now on TigerDirect for 209.99 with NO REBATES!

hdd My buddy ordered this drive a while ago from TigerDirect and received it last night. The initial reaction is “Wow“…

Aside from the drives standard stats and lack of FireWire 800, this drive is AWESOME. Initially it was much smaller than I anticipated, and the brushed aluminum front looks great. It has a huge power brick, but all external drives unfortunately seem to have this.

Lack of FireWire 800 would keep data-intensive Video and Photo editors away from this drive, though. The price ($209.99 right now on TigerDirect) also makes it a great drive for the buck.

Here are some specs on the drive:

Capacity (GB): 500

Interface: USB 2.0

Spindle Speed (RPM): 7200

Buffer Memory: 8MB

Average Seek (msec): less than 11

Data Transfer Rate on USB 2.0: Up to 480 Mb/sec

Dimensions: 1.4″ x 4.4″ x 7.4″

Driver Type: Seagate

This is an average drive with average specs, a cool case, and lacking FireWire 800. For that this drive gets a 7 out of 10. If you are just looking for some cheap storage room and don’t require FireWire 800 for data-intensive tasks, this drive is for you.

  1. LACIE DRIVES ARE NOT COM[ATIBLE WITH VISTA. I BURNED 2 EHD WHEN I HOOKED A BRAND NEW EHD TO MY NEW COMPUTER AND THE 3 YEAR OLD EHD I TOOK FROM THE XP COMPUTER QUICK WORKING WITH LOSS OF DATA.

    DO NOT BUY LACIE.

  2. GHM, it seems that your problem is with Vista and not with LaCie.
Instead of saying do not buy lacie, should be better to say…

Stay away from Vista because it has burned 3 EHD already…

No problems in OSX as of the moment here.

  3. ewwwww OSX… nah i havent had any problems with this on my Vista/HP pc at all, i think its your pc bud, or you might be pulling the USB out befor safly removing
