Vista: A view or prospect seen through a long NARROW avenue or Passage…
This is part of a definition for the noun “Vista.” And as the release date for Microsoft’s new operating system approaches I am, like many of you, begining to do my research as to whether I should buy Vista or not. In my research I am feeling an undertone of a sentiment creep into my mind as to “why should I be bothered with this?” Let me explain. Let’s say computers as we know them didn’t start to take off until 1995 with the introduction of windows 95 culminating with XP. Every new rendition promised so much, and in fits and sputters they mostly delivered. Except that each release or new product was a flawed product.
Now Vista is supposed to be “fixed” and protected. If history shows anything is that it won’t be. The only thing it will have going for it is that it is new. And really are we doing anything better with our computers that we weren’t already doing? Editing video, writing, number crunching, database building and on and on into the great cyber vistas. Which I remind you is a “view or prospect, esp. one seen through a long, narrow avenue or passage, as between rows of trees or houses.”
Narrow, yes that is what it is. I am not seeing anything so important as to make Vista a hot buy. I am insulted by Microsoft’s lack of attention to basic product quality. Will Vista be better? I hold a narrow view.
