AMD Announces Timetable for new Quad Core Phenom Chip Release

amd-headquarters.jpgAMD, one of the world’s leaders in Micro-processing devices, plans to replace it’s Athlon processor with the new “Phenom” design CPU. This new design will be a full quad core chip for desktop PCs, and AMD hopes that it will become some direct market competition for rival chipmaker Intel as well.

On Monday May 14, 2007 the company announced that the chip will indeed reach stores late in 2007. AMD plans to release an enterprise-oriented chip called “Barcelona” in the middle of the same year. The Original quad core Opteron chip was a huge impact on the CPU market, but the company began to backslide when Intel released its quad core chips for home desktop as well as server use.

Since then, the two manufacturers have been in a price war, and AMD hopes that these new chips will draw computer users away from Intel’s popular Core 2 Duo line. As AMD did not give any technical specifics about their new chip, some critics have withheld their opinions until some bench testing data is available. Adding the Phenom chip to its line of desktop processors will allow AMD to push dual-core processing from its top-shelf desktops into the entire mainstream product family.

AMD’s current line of desktop chips ranges from the high-end Athlon 64 FX to the Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 and entry-level Sempron. After launching Phenom, AMD will offer a high-end Phenom FX (in one or two quad-core chips), Phenom X4 and Phenom X2 (in quad-core and dual-core), Athlon X2 and Sempron.
