Plasma Televisions: Redefining the Flat Panel Revolution

panasonic-plasma-television.jpgDo you know Plasma? Specifically, Plasma Televisions—they are part of the new Flat Panel Display revolution that has people hanging their TVs on the wall like it was an art form. And in a way, it is. You see, Plasma display televisions create some of the richest, most vibrant colors ever seen on any television, anywhere. And the price of these home entertainment wonders is dropping steadily. That means that you could have the most brilliant form of television enjoyment that mankind has ever produced, right in your living room.

Plasmas are one of the most visually impressive television technologies ever created. There are a few things that have turned some manufacturers off to Plasmas, literally. The cost of production vs. profit ratio has caused a few television makers to switch efforts to compete in the world of Plasma’s backlit cousin, LCD flat panel displays. But remember, what’s not hot for a manufacturer might be sizzling for the rest of us. You see—LCDs still don’t make the fluid colors and inky, vivid blacks that plasmas do. And who cares if someone else doesn’t make as much money off of you? You still get a really, really nice TV.

Plasma televisions, because of the design technology used within them, have size constraints. There are precious few that are smaller than 42 inches diagonally. This has lead manufacturers This LCD television is nice, but it is also small. Not so, Plasma TVs.away from producing Plasma technology. But this is ALSO not really a bad thing. I for one, was unaware that the race was to see who could make the smallest television. So I might have to end up with a 42-inch or greater behemoth, if I want Plasma. Wait–that’s what I wanted in the first place. So where was the problem again?

Plagues upon the early Plasma technology like burn-ins or ghosting have been virtually eliminated. Plasmas still don’t last as long as LCDs, but we’re talking a couple of years difference between decades.

And finally, most affordable Plasma televisions are 720p resolution. Everyone is buzzing with the watchword “1080p”, the current highest possible rating a Television can get. It means that the set has at least 1080 pixels upon it Vertical side. TigerDirect.com also carries Visio brand Plasma Televisions, one of the most affordable Plasma sets ever made. This means it can show a signal rendered in 1080p. Cool, right? Except that your satellite and cable provider’s can’t. Television is only capable, at it’s HD highest, of achieving 1080i, which means that a single frame of onscreen information is sent in two different bursts, one right after the other. They appear to you and me as a single frame. That means that unless you’ve got an HD DVD player or Blu Ray disc device, 720p is all you need. Sorry to break it to you, cowboy.

Another Note: Unless you spring for HDMI cables, you won’t be seeing any 1080p signals anyway. 720p is the highest resolution any other video connection type can achieve.

Now that I’ve dispelled some of the ill-founded myths about Plasma televisions, I want to introduce you to a couple. Actually, our TigerTV hosts are going to introduce you. I’m not allowed near expensive merchandise, on account of the drooling. They’re both Plasma televisions, and they are both plenty big. One has a contrast ratio of 10000:1 (That’s really good. And it’s not a typo, either) and the other is 55 Inches diagonally. Go get a tape measure and see what your current television measures. Now compare. Now imagine that it’s just that size, but about 6 inches deep, hanging on your wall, impressing the living daylights out of all and sundry.
