And Then What Happened: This Day in History
Not everyone knows what happened today, all the way back in 1977. I didn’t know until just a few moments ago, but we’ve all been affected by what happened, in one way or another. On June 5, 1977 Apple introduced it’s first truly personal (and truly recognizable) computer, the Apple II. Ooohhhhhh, yeah–That’s what happened.
The Apple II is the computer that gave Apple a a fighting chance in the burgeoning computer industry. The company’s original computer had little in common with what we’d call a PC, but that all changed with the appearance of the Apple II.
It had an integrated keyboard, built-in programming languages, expandable memory (Gee wow!), color monitor, sound card and expansion slots. Not quite today’s gaming rig, but you get the picture. Apple then dominated the education market. The Apple II filled classrooms around the United States and all over the world. Some of places still use these machines today.
The Apple II remains one of the most successful personal computers ever built. It remained in production until October 1993, when the Macintosh finally put it in the “retired” column. Through various forms and versions, around 6 million Apple II’s were produced during it’s run.
