The new CPUs manufactured with 45nm process boast a lot of advantages. They run fast, run cool and squeeze less power off of today’s struggling power supplies. Yet, aside from the thermal benefits and great power efficiency, the best benefit is the relief to our wallets – price drops are our friend. The perfect example of this would be Intel’s new kid on the block, Core 2 Duo E8400. But lets go back to what caught my eye to begin with and the possibilities it presents in terms of overclocking – the new 45nm architecture. Let’s examine the specs and see why this new CPU should impress us.
Everyone wants high definition. But no one wants to invite the neighborhood over to check out their smallish, 20-something inch LCD. It’s just not a “conversation starter†anymore. Don’t get me wrong, anything that counts as High Definition is cool with me, but if you’re a bargain hound and want to get over 50 inches of true HD display, you should check out the Olevia 252TFHD LCD. It’ll have your friends grumbling about how much they paid for 1080p.
ThinkPad X300: What the well equipped Executive is carrying this year! The new ThinkPad X300 notebook is a breakthrough, full-featured business ultraportable that’s vastly more energy-efficient than previous models and forces none of the compromises typical of other ultraportable systems. You often have to sacrifice features, durability or style for portability. But not with the X300. It’s solid as a rock, thanks to the patent-pending, carbon-fiber/glass-fiber ThinkPad “roll cage†technology and other advances such as Flash-based Solid State Drives with no moving parts. In terms of style, it’s closer to the size of an actual paper notebook than a ThinkPad notebook has ever been, measuring less than ¾th of an inch at its thinnest and starting at just 2.93 lb. Even with the ultra-thin DVD burner it’s still an amazing 3.13 lb. And the X300 offers numerous design flourishes including a glossy bottom bezel, select illuminated buttons and — for the first time in the X Series — an integrated camera option and stereo speakers.
Want a Cell phone that turns into a Robot? Me too. But while there’s little hope any of us will ever get their very own Transformer, a Japanese company called Softbank Mobile Corp. wants to hook you up with the next best thing. It’s called the PhoneBraver, and looks like a small humanoid robot with arms, legs, and faces. The little monster’s bodies are made up of the cell phone itself.
Ever wished you could plug your USB devices in across the room, and not clutter up your desk? Here’s the solution. It’s called the 4-Port USB 2.0 Wireless Hub with Adapter, and it’s only by Iogear. One of the first Wireless USB solutions, the IOGEAR Wireless USB Hub & Adapter kit allows your desktop or laptop to wirelessly communicate with printers, scanners, cameras, game controllers, flash drives, external hard drives, and other USB devices.
Sounds like something straight out of a Sci-Fi movie, but according to the London Times a $299 headset is due to hit the markets soon that will read facial expressions and simple thoughts to control gaming actions. Called the Epoc, the headset works by reading facial expressions and basic thoughts via non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG), then transferring them to a game character, otherwise known as an avatar.
Electric – something we all take for granted to enjoy our daily lives – but when it’s gone, there’s a bit of freaking out. Nevermind the fact there isn’t any air conditioning, light or working elevators – what about the ‘net? I need to get online!
Luckily, I always ensure that I’m not going to take a head dive when the power goes out. I ensure a UPS is connected to my primary PC as well as another unit to tend to my router and modem. This way – even when the power goes out, I’m surfing. I remember the 5 hours during a hurricane that I was able to stay online. Happy times. For those in South Florida, nearly 3 million people lost their electricity after a mechanical failure at a substation near Miami.
The format wars are over, and Blu-Ray has won. For those of you who got an HD DVD player (Get one! They’re fun, soon-to-be nostalgic, and under 100 bucks!), I’m sorry. Kudos to those of you who bought a Playstation 3. So now the question is, are you going to go out and buy an expensive Blu-Ray player? I’m not. In fact, this is possibly the one thing that could trigger me to finally, finally build a multimedia center PC. You see, there’s a trick: the Lite-On DH-401S-08 Blu-Ray Playback Drive costs a bit less than a Blu-Ray Player. A few hundred dollars less.
