Sony Releases New UMDs for The PSP

200801029_1.jpgSony Computer Entertainment America recently announced that it will be releasing new Universal Media Discs for the PlayStation Portable. The UMDs will contain programs from MTV.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, last Thursday announced that it is offering popular MTV programming on the UMD, marking the first collaboration between SCEA and a major TV content provider. Headed for UMD are “Beavis and Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection,” volumes 2 and 3; “Jackass,” volumes 2 and 3; “Wildboyz,” volumes 1 and 2; “Viva La Bam,” volumes 2-4; and “Aeon Flux: The Complete Animated Collection.”

The PSP was initially marketed as a portable multimedia device, something that was capable of being more than just a game console. It could play games and music, store and view pictures, browse the web and play movies. During the first months of its release, it became commonplace to find UMD films in retail stores. Fast forward to the present and you’ve got an acronym problem: do you even remember what UMD means?

The decision to revive the UMD as a movie format is a move that some fail to comprehend, especially considering its history (short story: it failed), but I guess the powers-that-be didn’t feel like giving up just yet (Sony never gives up!). Maybe the success of the PSP Slim gave them a little encouragement.

Let’s see how this mini-revival works out. If the MTV-only content proves to be a hit, you can be sure that similar releases are going to follow.
