PMA Report: Nikon announces new D60 entry-level digital SLR

200801034_1.jpgIf you are looking for an affordable way of upgrading to a compact digital SLR, look no further. Nikon has just announced the latest addition to their D-series line of digital cameras – the D60. This new entry-level digital SLR is equipped with a 10.2 megapixel CCD sensor and Nikon’s highly regarded EXPEED image processing concept that produces pictures with smoother tones and more accurate colors. The D60 also comes with Nikon’s advanced 3-D Color Matrix Metering II for consistently balanced exposures for images with natural color and contrast.

The D60, one of Nikon’s most compact digital SLRs, is designed to fit naturally and comfortably in the hand. Its ergonomic design is complemented by intuitively placed controls putting the most commonly used ones within reach. It comes with a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor that displays an easy-to-use menu system. The new power conserving Eye Sensor turns the LCD monitor on and off automatically when the user alternates between looking through the viewfinder while taking pictures and reviewing pictures or camera settings through the LCD monitor.

With an ultra fast start-up time of 0.18 seconds, this entry-level digital SLR is no slouch. It uses SD and SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards for standard storage, or the Eye-Fi memory card which can automatically transfer captured images wirelessly to a PC or Mac. The D60 is capable of capturing a continuous string of up to 100 JPEG images at 3 frames per second.

The D60 offers new in-camera editing capabilities, such as cross-screen star effects, color intensifying filters, red-eye correction, image trim and more. The D60’s new Active D-Lighting feature can optimize images as pictures are taken producing more detailed shadow and highlight areas. The built-in image editing capabilities offer greater creative freedom which allows the user to print optimized pictures without having to rely on computer-based editing software. The D60 also offers the new Stop Motion Movie mode which allows users to create stop-motion animation from a series of up to 100 consecutive images.

The D60 comes packaged with Nikon’s AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR image stabilization lens that dramatically reduces blur caused when shooting handheld pictures, especially in low light with slow shutter speeds. The Nikon D60 kit will be available sometime in February or March 2008.

  1. Hmmmmm! Looks like this may be my next camera. My S1Is doesn’t give me clear pics all the time. Gotta do better.
