Nokia N82 Unlocked GPS Smartphone: GPS, Digital Camera, and More

nokia-n82-main-pic.jpgNokia is one of the world’s leading Wireless Phone manufacturers. They have a whole slew of products that prove this, but the Nokia N82 unlocked smartphone just rubs it in. Every feature on this phone is designed to perform, from the large LCD screen to the integrated digital camera.

A Perfect Traveler’s Companion

This is a phone for frequent travelers and wanderers that don’t want to get lost. It’s also the perfect handset for those that don’t want to fall out of contact with the rest of the world, even for a second. With full web capability, GPS (Global Positioning System) (augmented by Nokia’s exhaustive array of navigational options and tools), and a host of different messaging capabilities, this is the phone you want, period.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the N82 is how large the screen is. Measuring 2.4-inches diagonal (reference: That’s a similar size to the screens on many point and shoot digital cameras) and has 240×320 pixel count. In layman’s terms, that means that everything is easy to read and the screen itself can produce over 16 million different color combinations.

This might seem dumb, but the thing I liked about the N82 right of the bat was the small, widely spaced keys. You see; I tend to accidentally mash multiple buttons at once all the time, especially if I’m trying to send a text quickly. Small people, dexterous people, and women may not suffer from fat-thumb as I do, but those of you who know what I’m talking about, seriously consider this phone.

True GPS Navigation with Nokia GPS Software, Features, and Support

I’ll get to the Camera in a minute. Trust me, it’s worth waiting for. But what you’re all probably chomping at the bit about is the GPS feature. As I understand it (I didn’t actually disassemble the phone. My Powers that Be would have a fit) there’s a real live, honest-to-goodness GPS reciever in the N82. Some previous GPS services were only estimations based on where your cell phone signal was coming from.

This is the real deal: Nokia backs it up with some really cool GPS features that are available only to users with Nokia handsets. And since this is an unlocked phone, you can use it all over the world. So…it stands to reason that Nokia would provide GPS navigational maps for all over the world…and they do. Kudos, Nokia.

Integrated Digital Camera with All the Bells and Whistles

The Cameraphone component doesn’t skimp, either. It’s got a 5 megapixel image sensor, 10x digital zoom, xenon flash, Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, and picture editing software. All this is right on the phone. Again, this is the kind of stuff you’d ordinarily find on a point and shoot digital camera, right on the Nokia N82. There are at least 8 scene modes, so you never get stuck with an inopportune shot. Is it nighttime? Choose the night mode. Are you taking an arms-length self-portrait? There’s a scene setting for that too. Yes, seriously.

There’s a lot to say about the N82, but you should decide for yourself. It seriously is one of the most usable, useful phones I’ve ever run across. And the price point isn’t bad at all either. It’s a tri-band, unlocked GSM phone that requires a carrier that supports ordinary SIM cards. If that sounds like you, maybe it’s time to consider a new Nokia Handset.
