Most of MGS4 is cinematic, but who’s complaining? The close to real life quality of the animation will stun you, and the great attention to details, rich texture, and lush environment will inspire your gaming mood. But of course, the gameplay is never affected by this. Instead, the two are blended very well to create the ultimate gaming experience a gamer could possibly imagine. In fact, the two help one another. The cinematic side helps you understand the premise of your missions, so you can better sympathize with your allies and learn what’s really at stake.
Every turn of event in MGS4’s story is quite a surprise, so spoiling it here might kill the suspense. Solid Snake is known to suffer from rapid aging, so one of the challenges of the game is to deal with your character’s deteriorating body while you try to stop Liquid Ocelot from achieving his newest plot. Old characters will also be reunited in the course of the game’s many cinematic scenes – some intense, some dramatic, and others unexpectedly shocking.
Sound-wise, the game is really close to realistic. The musical score gets heavy-handed and the voice acting and writing are true to the nature of the game – it is at times, serious, yet it reminds gamers from time to time that they’re still playing a game. Expect some more twists and turns in the story as the game progresses. Controls are vaguely familiar, especially if you are a Metal Gear fan from the start. It is less awkward to grab an enemy soldier or perform a stealthy blade kill. Gunplay and close-quarters combat are more pleasing. Shooting mechanics are also enhanced, so controlling Solid is easier than ever.
Crawling, hugging walls, peeking around corners, and hanging from ledges – Solid Snake is known for these. Hide from enemies and make your way to your destination without getting spotted. There are also a number of important gadgets that will make your gaming a lot easier. There’s the OctoCamo suit, which takes on the texture of your surroundings when you’re prone or pressed against cover. It’s a breeze for Solid Snake when avoiding an enemy, and a delight for you, thanks to its cool visual effect.
Boss battles are challenging, but not to the point that it becomes impossible. The trick is to become tricky since just riddling the boss with bullets isn’t going to ensure victory. And guess what, Metal Gear Solid 4 offers some enjoyable online 16-player action to complement its superb single-player experience. You can go on a Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch with other gamers!
Overall, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a must-play. If you own a Playstation 3 and you don’t play this, then you’ll surely be missing out on a lot.
