Utilizing VOIP and other computer based telephone services, people are calling 9-1-1, posing as a local person - then the trouble begins.
I love technology. I embrace it. Technology makes my life so much easier. I can't imagine my life without a personal computer, cell phone, GPS navigation in my car, satellite TV, digital camera, the list is a very long one. But even I, who writes and talks about technology for a living, will agree that there are some technologies that should die and when I say "die," I mean die hard and fast. One of those technologies is the phone tree.

Think about when you last picked up the phone to call a credit card company or an airline or a bank or some other service orientated company about some pressing issue. You're calling that company because more than likely you need to speak to someone about a problem you are having such as a questionable charge on your credit card statement or trying to make a plane reservation or you want to speak to a bank teller for clarification on some banking service. In most of these cases your time is limited and you need to get some answers quickly. You know what needs to be asked and most of the time, a simple response will get you the answer to your question. But when you call, you don't get a person. You get a phone tree.

NETGEAR’s Skype WiFi Phone is the world’s first wireless Internet phone that can make free calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world, anytime you have WiFi access, without a PC. All of your contacts (up to 200) are shown right on the phone’s color display so you will know exactly who is online. You will also be more available for your friends to call, because you no longer have to be on your PC to be connected. You can even make calls to ordinary phones using SkypeOut for just pennies a minute and NO MONTHLY FEES. With the Skype WiFi Phone, NETGEAR makes true mobile wireless Internet telephony a reality. Now for the first time, a phone that lets you use any WiFi network to which you have access, to talk with anyone else who’s also on Skype, anywhere in the world, for absolutely free*.

"I took it out of the box, turned it on, plugged in my Skype user name and password, and was calling colleagues within five minutes." "Simple." "Sound quality is excellent, and with my SkypeOut account it was a snap to call those not using the Skype network."

"I would highly recommend this to anyone that uses Skype for calling, or for those who have historically shied away from using Skype as a telephone medium." "This Netgear WiFi phone takes all the pain out of Skype calling." "It's super easy to use."

The Advantages of Internet Telephoning (and a Few Disadvantages)
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has quickly advanced from being a novelty to a full-fledged force in the communications marketplace. Weary from paying huge phone bills, households and businesses now enjoy the dramatic savings of Internet telephone. It’s not unusual to see residential phone bills cut by $20 to $50 or more per month by switching from traditional phone lines to VoIP, which transmits your voice calls via the Internet, the same way your email is sent. While a normal telephone service transforms your voice into electronic signals, which your phone converts to sound, while VoIP technology digitizes your voice as just another bit of data. Now the major phone companies, as well as cable operators provide VoIP services, offering inexpensive local and long distance plans. Most of these providers also include an array of features similar to those offered by traditional carriers, such as caller ID, call waiting and voice mail as well as additional features such as the ability to use your home or business phone number no matter where you travel.

Today, I received an inquiry from Paul, asking:

I'm looking for a VOIP device that allows point-to-point communication on a LAN; no outside service provider wanted or required. It seems it would be a simple enough device to build, yet I don't see any.

Any Ideas?

Well, the answer to your question in short is yes, but it is probably overkill for what you need. The basic reason for lack of turnkey "VOIP over LAN" devices that you just plug in and work is that you still, like the telephone company, need a 'central office' which knows what is where.

Assuming you have internet connectivity, utilizing AOL's "VoiceTalk" on their IM client, or comparable services from Yahoo and others, allow you to do this, PC to PC while there are also USB telephones that are compatible with these services, allowing you to plug them into a PC and utilize them.

But, for what you really want - you can turn to the Open Source PBX called "Asterisk." Asterisk is a great example of how powerful the open source software movement is. This program will allow you to run a complete telephone PBX like most major corporations purchase from Lucent and other companies, for free. Just define your stations, plug in any standard SIP phone, and you are ready to go!
