From maps to micro-investments, we covered a lot of ground with new Android apps in October. Here we present you with our selection of some of the best newcomers from the past month.

HERE Maps

Nokia’s HERE maps is one of the four major global online mapping services, alongside Google, TomTom and OpenStreetMap. And it finally launched for Android this month, having previously only been available on Windows Phone (though it was on iPhone for a while too).

It’s a really great app, and genuine contender for Google Maps’ crown. Especially given that it sports full offline access for entire countries and continents. It’s not on Google Play yet though, you’ll need to install the .APK file.

Djay 2

Algoriddim has catered for the iOS and Mac fraternity for years, and the German company finally brought its popular Djay app to Android this month, letting you create mixes from Spotify or your own local library of music.

Algoriddim has also teamed up with a myriad of hardware manufacturers, including Numark, Casio and Philips, to build co-branded controllers that work with this app, as you can see in the video above.

Djay 2

Offtime

Offtime helps you switch off and tune out, letting you access the important stuff, such as calls from your other half or texts from important clients, while filtering out the noise you’d rather ignore.

Photo 02 10 2014 16 04 52 798x3101 730x283 10 of the best Android apps from October

You basically set up ‘rules’ – for example 4 missed calls in quick succession from someone you know could hint at urgent matters, therefore Offtime can permit the next call from that number to come through.

There are a handful of pre-set profiles, such as ‘Focused Work’, ‘Family’ and ‘Unplugging’.  ‘Unplugging’, for example, automatically mutes notifications, calls and texts, while app access is restricted too. You can tweak these profiles too to suit your own needs.

Google Fit

Earlier this year, Google unveiled its Google Fit platform to help people track their fitness goals. It’s essentially a set of APIs that lets developers dig in to rival apps and combine data for deeper insights.

In October, however, Google launched a dedicated Google Fit app for Android, serving to capture all your movements throughout the day, including walking, running and cycling.

The Google Fit app also lets you connect third-party devices and apps to gather all your data in a single place, covering Nike, HTC, LG, RunKeeper, Withings, Motorola, Noom, Runtastic and Polar.

Acorns [Us only]

Unfortunately, Acorns is a US-only affair for now, but it’s notable in terms of its uniqueness so gets a mention here.

Acorns helps you get rich by investing all your spare change. It connects up with your credit or debit card and links in with any purchase you make. Acorns ’rounds up’ to the nearest dollar and invests this for you automatically, with the change being put in a “diversified portfolio of index funds,” offered by the likes of Blackrock, Vanguard and PIMCO.

Camera51

Camera51 is a great little app for improving your photo-taking skills.

It offers onscreen help with composition, and works to ensure that your photos are structured correctly. As you shoot, a series of animations direct you where to aim the camera, with additional information feeding in to help ensure you have set things up as well as possible.

Skype Qik

Skype launched a new video messaging app last month called Skype Qik, centered around sharing short, spontaneous clips.

Each video clip lasts exactly two weeks – so it’s ephemeral, but you have a fair bit of time to watch them. Videos can be erased by the sender at any time, however.

Skype Qik

Microsoft Xim

In addition to Skype Qik, Microsoft also released a photo-sharing app called Xim, which is built upon simultaneous viewing.

So, the user selects a group of photos and everyone invited sees them on their device at the same time.

Microsoft Xim

Tidal [US/UK]

Tidal is a music-streaming service with a focus on high-fidelity audio, editorial curation and video content.

Costing $19.99 a month, Tidal uses ALAC and FLAC lossless formats at 1,411 kbps, 44.1kHz/16-bit. Roughly four-times the quality of most streaming services out there.

Tidal

Samba

Samba is a video messaging app that lets you shoot back 15-second reaction shots in response to your friends’ video messages. It proved popular when it launched on iOS earlier in the year, and now it’s on Android too it’s sure to gain at least a few more fans.

The Nexus 6 is Google’s most advanced Nexus smartphone yet, with the company focusing on premium Nexus devices this year that feature high-end specs and matching prices. The Nexus 6 has top-notch hardware across the board and the phone’s camera is supposed to offer a significantly better performance than previous models. Even though the Nexus 6 is not available to users for extensive camera testing, one Googler has just posted camera samples taken at night with the Nexus phablet.

The first camera samples taken with the Nexus 6’s main 13-megapixel rear camera — which packs a Sony IMX214 CMOS sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS) — were posted online a few days ago, but they were all take during the day.

But Google’s vice president of design Matias Duarte took to Google+ to post a couple of Halloween-themed pictures, both taken at night with the new Nexus 6.

“Happy to be back home, and look who was waiting to welcome me!,” Duarte wrote, posting the two images at the end of this post.

In addition to offering Nexus 6 buyers access to an even better camera, Google should also fix Nexus 5 camera issues once Lollipop rolls out and ensure an even better camera performance across Android devices that will make the jump to Android 5.0.

Duarte’s Nexus 6 night shots follow below.

A Startup No No: Hacking a potential investors’ voicemail

To most, it would seem like common sense: if you want someone to back your business, you probably shouldn’t start by annoying them.

However, Avi Zolty, Y Combinator alumni and founder of Skurt car rentals, seemed to bypass this usual thought process when trying to get the attention of angel investor Jason Calacanis. Instead, he decided to hack his voicemail and change the message to promote Skurt.

Zolty also posted on Medium about the stunt (since deleted) and the audio file is available for all to hear on Soundcloud. He also posted his article to Hacker News, but it was swiftly removed from there too.

Naturally, Calacanis was a bit taken aback initially.

Insane. Someone hacked my voicemail and changed my outgoing message to get me to invest. http://t.co/PTtjq289bX

— jason (@Jason) October 26, 2014

A stroke of luck

Clearly Zolty wasn’t following the phone hacking scandal in the UK, which involved people hacking into voicemail, and resulted in custodial sentences for some people. However, luckily for him, Calanacis was in an understanding mood, and after corresponding with Zolty, he forgave him and sent some friendly advice.

I forgive the kid who hacked my phone today. I know he was just an overzealous fan, but… #jcalgatepic.twitter.com/bTtONeGMv9 — jason (@Jason) October 27, 2014

Zolty got off lightly this time, and did indeed succeed in drawing attention to his business – but at the cost of letting the world know that he was willing to break the law to promote his business, which isn’t necessarily attractive to potential investors. To his credit, he did also take to Twitter to issue a public apology to Calanacis.

I just wanted to take a moment to sincerely apologize to @jason publicly. Been in contact, he’s a great sport, and I admire him so much.

— Avi Zolty (@AviZolty) October 26, 2014

For Zolty, this is probably one to file under ‘a lesson learned’ – and for other keen startup founders, it’s a warning of what not to do to get attention for your fledgling business.

As the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk can’t be accused of being an anti-technology luddite. That said, he definitely doesn’t support every major technological advance and in particular he thinks artificial intelligence is extremely dangerous and could end up putting humanity in situations that resemble sci-fi classics such as The Terminator and The Matrix.

Per Engadget, Musk told an MIT symposium last week that artificial intelligence represents “our biggest existential threat” as a species and says that toying with AI is akin to “summoning the demon.”

“We need to be very careful with artificial intelligence,” explained Musk. “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish. With artificial intelligence we’re summoning the demon. You know those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram, and the holy water, and he’s like — Yeah, he’s sure he can control the demon? Doesn’t work out.”

This isn’t the first time Musk has raised fears about developing AI. Over the summer he told CNBC that there’s “potentially a dangerous outcome” to AI research he’s been following and he directly alluded to The Terminator as a plausible future outcome.

Need more help with math problems than a calculator can provide? There’s now an app for that.

PhotoMath promises to help solve simple linear equations and other math problems by “reading” questions with the help of your smartphone camera.

PhotoMath from MicroBLINK on Vimeo.

But an answer isn’t all you’ll get from this free app. PhotoMath also provides a step-by-step guide of how each problem is solved, a feature that some consumers have lauded as a potentially useful tool for students, parents and educators.

“If you can’t figure out the answer and this app can show it to you step-by-step then this is precisely best used by people trying to learn math,” wrote one Redditor on Tuesday.

Another noted that “if you’re a parent helping with homework, knowing [the correct answer] and how to get there would be sweet.”

Some netizens, however, have pointed out that the app might prove a little too tempting for students looking to cut corners.

“Wet dream of high school math students, but perhaps not such a good idea?” Kontra, CounterNotions.com’s blogger, wrote on Twitter.

“Equation solving is a learned process. Once you short circuit it, it’s problematic,” he said.

PhotoMath is now available for iOS and Windows mobile devices. An Android version will be available in 2015.

Ikea knows Halloween is coming, but that doesn’t mean you have to ignore your furniture-shopping needs, even if you have to go shopping late at night. The company has come out with an interesting new TV ad for Halloween in Singapore, and it’s a chilling homage to a well-known horror movie.

In the short commercial (available below), Ikea adapts a famous scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining that you should be quite familiar with: the Big Wheel scene. But instead of riding through a creepy hotel, a child is simply taking a somewhat scary stroll late at night in an equally creepy empty Ikea store.

However, the horror-themed ad has a happy ending, as Ikea Singapore is simply promoting late-night furniture shopping. The full video is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

There is no feeling like when a highly anticipated game completely disappoints after it’s released. Months or even years of buildup can lead to a game that’s such a waste of time that you may end up selling your console because of it. Reddit users have sounded off on their most disappointing games ever and while there are few surprises, the reasons for their disappointment are nonetheless interesting.

One of the most upvoted comments in the Reddit thread is about the game Brink. One Redditor says, “Throwing my $60 out the window would have been a smarter decision than anything Brink’s AI ever did in the game.” Another adds, “Lighting three $20 bills on fire would’ve been more entertaining than that game.”

Next up is Destiny. This Redditor bluntly states how repetitive it is: “Each story mission begins with some dryly intoned lore, then you run to a location, reach a choke point, shoot stuff, progress a little, new choke point, shoot stuff. Access a mainframe, shoot waves of monsters. Then the mission is over.”

One Redditor took an even broader approach by stating, “Every Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 2,” was disappointing.

Check out the most disappointing games according to Redditors by upvotes:

1. Spore

2. Brink

3. Destiny

4.Every Post-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

5. Halo 4

6. Fable 3

7. Watchdogs

8. Elder Scrolls Online

9. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

10. Dead Island

With the success of the recent Lego movie, a 15-year old stop motion animator from Kilbarchan, Scotland named Morgan Spence decided he would use Legos to recreate some of the most iconic movie scenes of all time.

This classic scene from Titanic a great example of his work with Legos:

The Nexus 6 is bigger and more expensive than any previous Nexus-branded smartphone, but that doesn’t mean certain Android fans aren’t eager to buy the Motorola-made handset. The device has already been listed on Google’s Play Store pages well ahead of its actual launch, with the company reminding potential customers they’ll soon be able to purchase it online.

The phone will be available in two storage versions, including 32GB ($649) and 64GB ($699), with buyers being able to order one directly from Google starting with October 29th, the same date Google mentioned when announcing the phone last week. The company has not yet revealed when the handset will be shipped, although more details on the matter should be announced once preorders start.

Unlike in previous years, when only certain U.S. carriers sold Nexus handsets, the Nexus 6 will also be available from the country’s main carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon, although launch details for them aren’t available at this time either.

In addition to the Nexus 6, Google will also sell two other brand new Nexus devices in its Play Store this year, including the Nexus 9 (already available for preorder), and the Nexus Player (listed as out of stock at this time).
