Need more help with math problems than a calculator can provide? There’s now an app for that.

PhotoMath promises to help solve simple linear equations and other math problems by “reading” questions with the help of your smartphone camera.

PhotoMath from MicroBLINK on Vimeo.

But an answer isn’t all you’ll get from this free app. PhotoMath also provides a step-by-step guide of how each problem is solved, a feature that some consumers have lauded as a potentially useful tool for students, parents and educators.

“If you can’t figure out the answer and this app can show it to you step-by-step then this is precisely best used by people trying to learn math,” wrote one Redditor on Tuesday.

Another noted that “if you’re a parent helping with homework, knowing [the correct answer] and how to get there would be sweet.”

Some netizens, however, have pointed out that the app might prove a little too tempting for students looking to cut corners.

“Wet dream of high school math students, but perhaps not such a good idea?” Kontra, CounterNotions.com’s blogger, wrote on Twitter.

“Equation solving is a learned process. Once you short circuit it, it’s problematic,” he said.

PhotoMath is now available for iOS and Windows mobile devices. An Android version will be available in 2015.

Ikea knows Halloween is coming, but that doesn’t mean you have to ignore your furniture-shopping needs, even if you have to go shopping late at night. The company has come out with an interesting new TV ad for Halloween in Singapore, and it’s a chilling homage to a well-known horror movie.

In the short commercial (available below), Ikea adapts a famous scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining that you should be quite familiar with: the Big Wheel scene. But instead of riding through a creepy hotel, a child is simply taking a somewhat scary stroll late at night in an equally creepy empty Ikea store.

However, the horror-themed ad has a happy ending, as Ikea Singapore is simply promoting late-night furniture shopping. The full video is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

There is no feeling like when a highly anticipated game completely disappoints after it’s released. Months or even years of buildup can lead to a game that’s such a waste of time that you may end up selling your console because of it. Reddit users have sounded off on their most disappointing games ever and while there are few surprises, the reasons for their disappointment are nonetheless interesting.

One of the most upvoted comments in the Reddit thread is about the game Brink. One Redditor says, “Throwing my $60 out the window would have been a smarter decision than anything Brink’s AI ever did in the game.” Another adds, “Lighting three $20 bills on fire would’ve been more entertaining than that game.”

Next up is Destiny. This Redditor bluntly states how repetitive it is: “Each story mission begins with some dryly intoned lore, then you run to a location, reach a choke point, shoot stuff, progress a little, new choke point, shoot stuff. Access a mainframe, shoot waves of monsters. Then the mission is over.”

One Redditor took an even broader approach by stating, “Every Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 2,” was disappointing.

Check out the most disappointing games according to Redditors by upvotes:

1. Spore

2. Brink

3. Destiny

4.Every Post-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

5. Halo 4

6. Fable 3

7. Watchdogs

8. Elder Scrolls Online

9. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

10. Dead Island

The Nexus 6 is bigger and more expensive than any previous Nexus-branded smartphone, but that doesn’t mean certain Android fans aren’t eager to buy the Motorola-made handset. The device has already been listed on Google’s Play Store pages well ahead of its actual launch, with the company reminding potential customers they’ll soon be able to purchase it online.

The phone will be available in two storage versions, including 32GB ($649) and 64GB ($699), with buyers being able to order one directly from Google starting with October 29th, the same date Google mentioned when announcing the phone last week. The company has not yet revealed when the handset will be shipped, although more details on the matter should be announced once preorders start.

Unlike in previous years, when only certain U.S. carriers sold Nexus handsets, the Nexus 6 will also be available from the country’s main carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon, although launch details for them aren’t available at this time either.

In addition to the Nexus 6, Google will also sell two other brand new Nexus devices in its Play Store this year, including the Nexus 9 (already available for preorder), and the Nexus Player (listed as out of stock at this time).

If you’re addicted to Facebook and trying to quit, here’s a little trick: Think about how much you love Instagram.

According to a new study, people who quit Facebook for three days have a much weaker urge to return if they are reminded of the many other social media sites and apps that can fulfill their desire for online friendship.

To assess how people reacted to Facebook deprivation, researchers asked 167 students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong to abstain from the social media site for three days. Participants were split into two groups to answer surveys that were exactly the same except for one key element: One group was explicitly queried at the beginning and end of the experiment about using other social networks such as Instagram and Whatsapp, and the other was not.

After three days of Facebook-free life, those who had not been asked about other social media sites said they wanted to use Facebook more than they did on the first day. But those who had been reminded of alternative sites was less interested in using Facebook than they had been at the beginning of the experiment.

The chart below shows the two groups’ reactions to losing Facebook between the first day (in black) and the third day (in gray). The “Low” group, which was not asked about other social media, reported “missing” and “liking” Facebook more after not having access for three days. The group also had a stronger “intention” to use Facebook again soon.

On the other hand, the “High” group, which was asked about other social media, reported that they missed, liked and intended to use Facebook less than they had three days prior.

facebook quitting

Not using Facebook for three days made one group just want to use it more.

Past research has found that Facebook makes people happier when it is used to directly interact with others, rather than to simply peruse other people’s posts. So it’s possible that the mention of other social media sites led the “High” group to substitute connecting with people through those sites for their lost time on Facebook — and thus to miss Facebook less.

Cutting off online interactions beyond Facebook can have negative consequences, according to another study last year. Heavy Internet users were found to experience “negative moods” when quitting the Internet cold turkey.

The recent Facebook experiment was just one of several included in a larger study, which was designed to examine how people’s behavior changes when they are deprived of some of their favorite products. It was conducted by professors Xianchi Dai of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Ayelet Fishbach of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

In addition to the arrival of Lollipop, Android fans have one more reason to be excited about their favorite platform — especially those people who play plenty of games on their smartphones and tablets.

Google on Thursday announced on its Android Developers’ Google+ page that Android gamers will be able to engage in local multiplayer action following an update to the latest Play services version.

“Google Play Games has added the ability for players to find each other nearby in multiplayer games with the latest Play services update,” the company said on Google+. “Through games that support Play Games multiplayer, players can now invite others nearby into the same game when starting a multiplayer session, creating more local competitive and cooperative experiences. Learn more about Play Games services and multiplayer support here.”

The feature will be available on any Android device as soon as its running the latest Play services version, not just to Android 5.0 Lollipop users.

Just like Apple, Google embraced phablets this year, deciding to launch a Nexus 6 smartphone so huge that not all potential buyers will be interested in it. The device has a 6-inch quad HD display that’s half an inch bigger than the iPhone 6 Plus Full HD screen, but that doesn’t mean the Motorola-made phablet is actually bigger than the iPhone 6 phablet.

A leaked image showing the iPhone 6 Plus next to the alleged Nexus 6 hit the web before Google unveiled its 5.9-inch device, showing the two devices have about the same height, with the Nexus smartphone being a bit wider than the iPhone. But Google+ user Duan Dao posted a picture (image above) showing Apple’s and Google’s new devices side by side, with screens turned on, revealing one major advantage the Nexus 6 seems to have over the iPhone 6 Plus.

Even though the iPhone 6 Plus and Nexus 6 are about the same size, Motorola is able to actually offer users a much bigger display, and thus access to even more content at once, as the handset doesn’t have a physical home button to get in the way.

Meanwhile, Apple’s iconic home button is still present on its iPhone 6 models, and that’s why the iPhone 6 phablet has a 5.5-inch screen packed in a bigger body.

Apple can’t just ditch the home button either, as the physical button is even more important for the iPhone maker than before. The Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in the button is used both for unlocking the device and for performing Apple Pay payments on the iPhone 6 models. Not to mention the fact that Apple has opened Touch ID access to non-Apple apps this year.

For what it’s worth, the iPhone 6 Plus measures 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm and weighs 172g, while the Nexus 6 measures 159.26 x 82.98 x 10.06mm and weighs 189g.

BGR reviewed Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Note 4 phablet on Wednesday and in the process, we spent a good amount of time comparing Samsung’s latest and greatest to the new iPhone 6 Plus. 2014 marks the first time Samsung will have to go head to head with Apple in the phablet space, and we already know that the competition is going to be fierce. Apple is selling iPhone 6 Plus units as quickly as its manufacturing partners can build them, and every device Apple sells represents another customer in the comparatively small phablet market that won’t be buying Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4.

While we compared the two devices in a number of important areas, we didn’t spend much time comparing their class-leading cameras. Luckily, a new feature published on Thursday does a great job of just that.

Aloysius Low at CNET took some time to put the new Galaxy Note 4’s 16-megapixel camera through the paces and compare it to the cameras on Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus and LG’s flagship G3 phablet. While the cameras in Samsung’s older phones were almost always poor performers, Samsung has completely turned things around in its latest smartphones with cameras that are easily among the best in the business.

We had nothing but good things to say about the camera in the Note 4, and it looks like our assessment was spot on. Low noted in his extensive camera showdown that the Galaxy Note 4’s camera captures photos that often have “a lot more detail” than images taken with the iPhone 6 Plus or G3, and he posted quite a few sample pictures to illustrate how impressive the Note 4’s shooter is.

Of course, the iPhone 6 Plus is no slouch and it definitely has advantages over the Galaxy Note 4. Low observed that the colors in photos taken on the 6 Plus are far more accurate, and low-light detail is much better than it is on the Note 4.

A few of Low’s sample images can be seen below (click to full-size versions), but dozens more can be seen in his camera showdown, which is linked below in our source section.
